Hiking the Galtee Mountains: a first-timer's guide

The Galtees rise steeply out of the Golden Vale and give some of the finest ridge walking in Munster. They are also more serious than they look from the road, so a little preparation goes a long way.

The character of the range

The Galtees run roughly east to west for about twenty-five kilometres, topping out at Galtymore. The northern side is steep and dramatic, with corrie lakes tucked underneath the ridge; the southern side rises more gently through forestry.

Typical day out

Most walking days involve four to six hours of movement, six hundred to nine hundred metres of ascent, and a good deal of rough, wet ground. Paths exist but they are informal — this is not a maintained trail network.

Weather and visibility

Cloud sits on the ridge frequently, and the summit plateau offers very few features to navigate by. Conditions at the top are routinely colder and windier than in the valley. Check a mountain-specific forecast rather than a town forecast.

What to wear and carry

  • Proper hiking boots with ankle support and grip — trainers are not suitable.
  • Waterproof jacket and overtrousers.
  • Warm layer, hat and gloves, even in summer.
  • Food, water and a fully charged phone.

Going with a guide

If you are new to Irish hill walking, going out with a qualified Mountain Leader takes the navigation and route-choice pressure off, and you get a lot more out of the day.
