The Cork Harbour Greenway: what to expect

The greenway running out of Cork city along the harbour is one of the best easy cycling routes in Munster. It is flat, traffic-free for most of its length, and the water is beside you almost the whole way.

Where it goes

The route leaves the city near St Patrick's Quay and follows the river and harbour edge past Blackrock Castle and onwards along the old railway line. Because it follows a railway alignment, the gradient is almost non-existent.

Surface and suitability

The greenway is a sealed, well-maintained path shared with walkers. It suits standard hybrid bikes, e-bikes and anyone who has not cycled in a while. Children who are confident on a bike manage it comfortably.

Good stopping points

  • Blackrock Castle — coffee, an observatory and a view straight down the harbour.
  • The old station houses along the line, which are worth a look for the railway history.
  • Open harbour viewpoints where the water widens out towards Cobh.

What to bring

  • A light waterproof — the harbour is exposed and showers arrive quickly.
  • Water and a snack, especially in summer.
  • Sunglasses; the glare off the water is stronger than people expect.

How long it takes

Allow around two to three hours at a relaxed pace with stops. It is a route best enjoyed slowly — the point is the harbour, not the mileage.
